Potential and Ability (ала алу / -а алмау)
Ability and possibility ('can, to be able to') are formed by combining the main verb converb in -а/-е/-й with the auxiliary verb алу (to take).
In Kazakh, physical ability, acquired skill, permission, and objective possibility ('can, to be able to') are constructed analytically by attaching the converb -а / -е / -й to the main verb root, followed by the conjugated auxiliary verb алу (etymologically 'to take'):
Verb Root + -а / -е / -й + алу (conjugated)
Examples in various tenses: - Present Habitual: Мен қазақша еркін сөйлей аламын* (I can speak Kazakh fluently). - Simple Past: Асқар кеше жиналысқа келе алды (Asqar was able to come to the meeting yesterday). - Future: Біз ертең саған көмектесе аламыз* (We will be able to help you tomorrow).
Inability and Negation (-а алмау): To express inability or impossibility ('cannot, could not'), the auxiliary алу itself takes the negative suffix -ма-: - Мен мұны істей алмаймын* (I cannot do this). - Ол уақытында келе алмады (He could not come on time). - Біз жауап бере алмаймыз* (We cannot answer).
Unlike Turkish, which fused this into a single bound suffix (-ebil-), Kazakh maintains an analytic auxiliary compound structure.
