Cardinal & Ordinal Numbers and the 'de' Rule in Romanian
Numbers and the Preposition 'de' (douăzeci de)
Romanian numbers distinguish gender in 1, 2, and 12 (doi/două), and numbers from 20 onwards obligatorily require the preposition de before nouns (douăzeci de cărți).
Romanian numerals feature unique morphological agreements and syntax rules that set them apart from other Romance languages:
1. Gender Agreement in Numerals: - 1: un băiat (one boy), o fată (one girl), un scaun (one chair). - 2: doi (masculine: doi băieți) vs. două (feminine/neuter: două fete, două scaune). - 12: doisprezece (masculine: doisprezece băieți) vs. douăsprezece (feminine/neuter: douăsprezece fete, douăsprezece trenuri). - Teens are formed with -sprezece ('on ten'): unsprezece (11), treisprezece (13).
2. The Obligatory 'de' Preposition Rule from 20 Onwards: - From 1 through 19, the numeral directly modifies the noun: cinci cărți (5 books), nouăsprezece studenți (19 students). - From 20 through 100+, whenever the last two digits are not between 01 and 19, Romanian strictly requires the preposition 'de' between the numeral and the noun: - douăzeci de cărți (20 books, lit. 'twenty of books') - cincizeci de studenți (50 students) - o sută de lei (100 lei) - But: douăzeci și unu de studenți vs. douăzeci și doi de băieți / douăzeci și două de fete.
*3. Ordinal Numbers (Numeralele ordinale): - Formed with al ...-lea (masc.) / a ...-a (fem.): primul / prima (1st), al doilea / a doua (2nd), al treilea / a treia (3rd), al zecelea / a zecea* (10th).
