Future Tense Formation in Slovak (Compound vs. Simple)
Future Tense Formation (Budúci čas: budem + infinitív a dokonavé tvary)
Imperfective verbs form compound future with auxiliary budem/budeš/bude/budeme/budete/budú + infinitive (budem čítať); perfective verbs express future via present conjugations (prečítam, napíšem).
In Slovak grammar, the *Future Tense (Budúci čas) is formed systematically according to the aspect (vid*) of the verb:
*1. Compound Future of Imperfective Verbs (Zložený budúci čas): Formed using the conjugated future forms of byť combined with the infinitive: - ja budem čítať / pracovať (I will read / work) - ty budeš čítať - on / ona / ono bude čítať - my budeme čítať - vy budete čítať - oni / ony budú čítať. - Negation: nebudem čítať, nebude pracovať, nebudeme čakať*.
*2. Simple Future of Perfective Verbs (Jednoduchý budúci čas): Perfective verbs cannot take budem; their present-tense personal inflections inherently denote completed future actions: - napíšem (I will write [and finish]) - prečítam (I will read [through to completion]) - kúpim (I will buy) - urobíme* (we will do/make).
3. Future of the Verb 'Byť' (To Be): Byť has its own synthetic future forms: budem (I will be), budeš, bude, budeme, budete, budú (Negated: nebudem, nebude, nebudeme).
Learner Mistake: Combining budem with a perfective infinitive (budem napísať or budem kúpiť is incorrect). Always use either budem písať (process) or napíšem (result).

Zajtra popoludní budeme študovať novú slovenskú gramatiku v univerzitnej knižnici.
Tomorrow afternoon we will be studying new Slovak grammar in the university library.
Hneď po návrate domov ti napíšem podrobnú správu o celom našom výlete.
Right after returning home I will write you a detailed report about our entire trip.
Cez víkend nebudeme pracovať, pretože chceme ísť na výlet do prírody.
Over the weekend we will not be working because we want to go on a trip into nature.
Kedy presne kúpite lístky na vlak do Košíc pre celú našu skupinu?
When exactly will you buy the train tickets to Košice for our whole group?
