Verbal Aspect in Slovak: Imperfective vs. Perfective

In Slovak grammar, *Verbal Aspect (Slovesný vid)* is a fundamental category permeating the entire verbal system. Almost every concept is expressed through an aspectual pair:

*1. Imperfective Aspect (Nedokonavý vid): - Denotes an ongoing process, unbounded duration, or habitual repetition (Čo robíš? — Píšem list). - Only imperfective verbs can form a true present tense and compound future with budem (budem písať, budem čítať). - Common base verbs: písať, čítať, robiť, kupovať, volať, variť*.

*2. Perfective Aspect (Dokonavý vid): - Denotes a completed action with a definite result, a punctual moment, or a total unified whole (Napísal som list - I wrote the letter and finished it). - Cannot express present ongoing actions: Present-tense endings on a perfective verb inherently express the simple future (napíšem = I will write, kúpim = I will buy, prečítam* = I will read).

3. Methods of Aspect Pair Formation: - *Prefixation (Prefixácia): písať → napísať, robiť → urobiť, variť → navariť, čítať → prečítať. - Suffixation (Sufixácia): kúpiť (pf) → kupovať (ipf), dať (pf) → dávať (ipf), otvoriť (pf) → otvárať (ipf). - Suppletion (Iný koreň): brať (ipf) / vziať (pf), klásť (ipf) / položiť (pf)*.

Learner Mistake: Using budem with a perfective verb (budem napísať is a severe grammatical error; use either budem písať [imperfective] or simply napíšem [perfective future]).
