Active and Passive Participles (Činné a trpné príčastia: -úci, -iaci, -ný, -tý)
Present Active Participles end in -úci/-iaci (pracujúci, hovoriaci; declension cudzí); Past Passive Participles end in -ný/-tý (napísaný, otvorený, umytý; declension pekný).
In Slovak grammar, *Verbal Participles (Príčastia)* function as verbal adjectives, agreeing in gender, number, and case with nouns:
*1. Present Active Participle (Činné príčastie prítomné): - Formed from the 3rd person plural present tense by adding suffixes -úci / -uci or -iaci / -aci: - pracovať → pracujú → pracuj-úci / pracuj-úca / pracuj-úce (working) - čítať → čítajú → čítaj-úci (reading) - hovoriť → hovoria → hovor-iaci (speaking) - písať → píšu → píš-uci (shortened by Rhythmic Law!). - Declension: Declines exclusively following the soft adjective model cudzí (pracujúceho, pracujúcemu*).
*2. Passive Participle (Trpné príčastie): - Formed from transitive verb stems using suffixes -ný / -na / -né or -tý / -tá / -té: - napísať → napísan-ý / napísan-á / napísan-é (written) - otvoriť → otvoren-ý (opened) - kúpiť → kúpen-ý (bought) - umyť → umy-tý (washed) - zavrieť → zavre-tý (closed). - Declension: Declines following the hard adjective model pekný (napísaného, napísanému). - Syntax: Used in the periphrastic passive voice (Kniha bola napísana) and as adjectival modifiers (otvorené dvere* = opened doors).
Learner Mistake: Violating the Rhythmic Law in active participles: after long roots (píš-), the suffix must be short (píšuci, not píšúci).
