The Slovak Transgressive (Prechodník: -úc, -iac)

The Transgressive / Adverbial Participle (Prechodník: -úc, -uc, -iac, -ac)

An invariable verbal adverb expressing a secondary simultaneous action performed by the same subject, formed with suffixes -úc/-uc (idúc, píšuc) or -iac/-ac (robiac, sediac).

In Slovak grammar, the *Transgressive (Prechodník)* is a non-finite verbal adverb indicating a secondary, accompanying action occurring simultaneously with the main clause verb, performed strictly by the same grammatical subject:

1. Morphological Formation: Formed from the 3rd person plural present tense stem by replacing the ending -ú / -ia / -ajú with transgressive suffixes: - -úc / -uc (Class 1 & 2 verbs): - ísť → idú → id-úc (while walking / going) - niesť → nesú → nes-úc (while carrying) - čítať → čítajú → čítaj-úc (while reading) - písať → píšu → píš-uc (shortened after long root by Rhythmic Law!). - -iac / -ac (Class 3 verbs in -ia): - robiť → robia → rob-iac (while doing / making) - sedieť → sedia → sed-iac (while sitting) - stáť → stoja → stoj-ac (while standing) - kúpiť → kúpia → kúp-iac.

2. Core Syntactic Constraints: - *Identical Subject (Spoločný podmet): The transgressive can only describe the subject of the finite verb: - Kráčajúc po ulici, Peter počúval hudbu. (Walking along the street, Peter listened to music). - Invariable*: It does not decline for gender, number, or case.

3. Stylistic Register: Primarily used in written, literary, formal, and journalistic Slovak; in spoken registers, it is commonly replaced by coordinate clauses (Kráčal po ulici a počúval hudbu) or temporal clauses with keď / zatiaľ čo.

Learner Mistake: Creating a «dangling participle» where the transgressive refers to an entity other than the grammatical subject (Idúc po ulici, spadol mi klobúk is an error; the hat was not walking).
