Passive Voice in Slovak (Reflexive and Periphrastic Passive)
Passive Voice (Trpný rod / Pasívum: zvratné a opisné)
Expressed in two ways: 1. Reflexive Passive with sa for general/impersonal statements (Kniha sa číta ľahko), and 2. Periphrastic Passive using byť + passive adjectival participle (-ný/-tý: Kniha bola napísaná v Bratislave).
In Slovak syntax, the *Passive Voice (Trpný rod / Pasívum)* shifts the thematic focus from the agent of the action to the patient or result. Standard Slovak employs two distinct passive constructions:
*1. Reflexive Passive (Zvratné pasívum): - Formed by taking a 3rd-person active verb and adding the reflexive particle sa: - V Bratislave sa stavia nový most. (A new bridge is being built in Bratislava). - Tento tovar sa predáva vo všetkých obchodoch. (These goods are sold in all stores). - Ako sa píše toto slovo?* (How is this word written?). - Preferred for continuous processes, habitual actions, and impersonal rules where the agent is unknown or irrelevant.
*2. Periphrastic Passive (Opisné pasívum): - Formed with the auxiliary verb byť combined with the Passive Adjectival Participle (Trpné príčastie) in -ný / -tý: - Kniha bola napísaná známym slovenským autorom. (The book was written by a famous Slovak author). - Zmluva je podpísaná. (The contract is signed). - Budova bude otvorená na budúci mesiac. (The building will be opened next month). - Participle endings agree in gender and number with the subject: -ný, -ná, -né, -ní / -né*.
3. Agent Expression: The agent is expressed using the Instrumental case without preposition (napísaný autorom = written by the author).
Learner Mistake: Overusing the periphrastic passive where Slovak naturally prefers the reflexive passive (Most je stavaný sounds unnatural; native Slovak uses Most sa stavia).
