Imperfective motion verbs pair into determinate (unidirectional single trip: ísť, niesť, viesť, letieť) and indeterminate (habitual, roundtrip, multidirectional: chodiť, nosiť, vodiť, lietať).
In Slovak grammar, *Verbs of Motion (Slovesá pohybu) feature a specialized aspectual subdivision within imperfective verbs between Determinate (Jednosmerné / určité) and Indeterminate (Viacsmerné / neurčité / opakovacie)* verbs:
1. Determinate Motion Verbs (Single journey in one direction RIGHT NOW): - ísť (to go on foot right now): Idem do školy. (I am walking to school right now). - (Conjugation: idem, ideš, ide, ideme, idete, idú; Past: išiel, išla, išli). - ísť / cestovať (by vehicle): Vlak ide do Košíc. - niesť (to carry in one direction right now): Nesiem ťažkú tašku. - viesť (to lead/drive right now): Viedol auto domov. - letieť (to fly right now): Lietadlo letí do Viedne.
2. Indeterminate Motion Verbs (Habitual, repeated, round-trip, or aimless): - chodiť (to walk regularly / attend / go back and forth): - Každý deň chodím do školy pešo. (Every day I go to school on foot). - Rád chodím po meste. (I like strolling around the city). - nosiť (to carry habitually / wear clothes): Nosím okuliare (I wear glasses), Nosí tašky do obchodu. - vodiť (to lead repeatedly / walk someone): Vodí deti do škôlky. - lietať (to fly regularly / fly around): Vtáky lietajú na juh.
3. Prefixed Perfective Derivatives: Attaching prefixes creates perfective directional verbs with precise meanings: - prísť (to arrive on foot), odísť (to depart/leave), vojsť (to enter), vyjsť (to exit), prejsť (to cross), obísť (to bypass).
Learner Mistake: Using ísť for habitual routines (Každý deň idem do práce instead of Každý deň chodím do práce).
