The Aorist (Aorist) Simple Past Tense in Serbian
The Aorist / Simple Past (Aorist: prosto prošlo vreme)
A vibrant simple past tense retained from Common Slavic, formed from perfective verbs (-h, -e, -e, -smo, -ste, -še / -oh, -e, -e, -osmo, -oste, -oše) for dynamic narrative action.
Unlike West Slavic languages (Polish, Czech, Slovak) and Russian, which completely lost their ancient simple past tenses, Serbian *retains a fully functioning, productive Aorist (Aorist / Pređašnje svršeno vreme)* in narrative literature, high journalism, folklore, and expressive spoken storytelling:
1. Aspect and Semantics: - The Aorist is formed *almost exclusively from Perfective Verbs (Svršeni glagoli). - It describes a sudden, dynamic, completed action that occurred immediately prior to the present moment or within a vivid narrative sequence (Ugledah ga i pozvah ga* = I caught sight of him and called out to him!).
2. Morphological Conjugation Patterns: - Pattern A (Stems ending in a vowel: -h, -Ø, -Ø, -smo, -ste, -še): - uraditi → ja uradih, ti uradi, on uradi, mi uradismo, vi uradiste, oni uradiše* - pročitati → ja pročitah, ti pročita, on pročita, mi pročitasmo, vi pročitaste, oni pročitaše - piti (popiti) → popih, popi, popi, popismo, popiste, popiše. - Pattern B (Stems ending in a consonant: -oh, -e, -e, -osmo, -oste, -oše): - reći (rek-) → ja rekoh, ti reče, on reče, mi rekosmo, vi rekoste, oni rekoše - pobeći → ja pobegoh, ti pobeže, on pobeže, mi pobegosmo, vi pobegoste, oni pobegoše*.
3. Colloquial Expressiveness: In everyday Serbian speech, the Aorist of certain common verbs (Odo' ja! = I'm off!, Rekoh ti! = I told you so!) remains deeply rooted and idiomatic.

As soon as I caught sight of my old professor in the hallway, I immediately approached him and offered my hand.
Svi prisutni u velikoj sali ustadoše i glasno pozdraviše novog predavača.
All present in the large hall stood up and loudly greeted the new lecturer.
Otvorih pismo, pročitah važne vesti i odmah pozvah telefonom svoje roditelje.
I opened the letter, read the important news, and immediately called my parents on the phone.
Rekoh vam juče celu istinu o rezultatima našeg naučnog istraživanja.
Yesterday I told you the whole truth about the results of our scientific research.
