The Imperfect (Imperfekat) Continuous Past Tense in Serbian
The Imperfect / Continuous Past (Imperfekat: prošlo nesvršeno vreme)
A classical simple past tense formed exclusively from imperfective verbs (-ah, -aše, -aše, -asmo, -aste, -ahu) expressing ongoing past background states.
Alongside the Aorist, Serbian preserves the archaic Slavic *Imperfect (Imperfekat / Pređašnje nesvršeno vreme), a simple past tense dedicated to describing unfolding, continuous, simultaneous, or repeated background states in the past*:
1. Aspectual Distinction: - While the Aorist requires perfective verbs to mark sharp results, the Imperfect is formed *strictly and exclusively from Imperfective Verbs (Nesvršeni glagoli). - In classical narrative style, the Imperfect sets the atmospheric background (Sunce sijaše, ptice pevahu = The sun was shining, birds were singing) against which a sudden Aorist event strikes (odjednom pukne / puče grom*).
2. Morphological Conjugation Paradigms: - Conjugation Suffix -ah, -aše, -aše, -asmo, -aste, -ahu (with sound changes for consonants): - čitati → ja čitah, ti čitaše, on čitaše, mi čitasmo, vi čitaste, oni čitahu* - govoriti → ja govorah, ti govoraše, on govoraše, mi govorasmo, vi govoraste, oni govorahu - nositi → ja nošah (with jotation), ti nošaše, on nošaše, mi nošasmo, vi nošaste, oni nošahu - pevati → ja pevah, ti pevaše, on pevaše, mi pevasmo, vi pevaste, oni pevahu*.
3. Literary Register: While rarely heard in colloquial street speech today (where it has been supplanted by imperfective Perfekat), the Imperfect remains essential for reading Serbian classical literature (Ivo Andrić, Miloš Crnjanski, Njegoš) and traditional epic prose.
