The Conditional Mood (Potencijal) in Serbian
Conditional Mood (Potencijal / Kondicional: bih, bi, bismo)
Constructed with the aorist auxiliary of biti (bih, bi, bi, bismo, biste, bi) + l-participle, expressing hypothetical conditions, wishes, and polite requests.
In Serbian grammar, the *Conditional Mood (Potencijal / Pogodbeni način)* expresses hypothetical possibilities, conditional actions ('would do'), counterfactual scenarios, polite requests, and unfulfilled desires:
1. Structural Formula: Auxiliary Forms of BITI (bih, bi, bi, bismo, biste, bi) + Past Participle (-l)
Conjugation of 'raditi' (to work): - 1st sg.: ja bih radio (masc.) / radila (fem.) (I would work) - 2nd sg.: ti bi radio / radila* - 3rd sg.: on bi radio / ona bi radila / ono bi radilo - 1st pl.: mi bismo radili / radile - 2nd pl.: vi biste radili / radile - 3rd pl.: oni bi radili / one bi radile / ona bi radila (Note: 3rd plural uses bi, NOT biše*!).
2. Core Functional Usages: - Conditional Sentences with 'kad bi' / 'ako': Kad bih imao vremena, putovao bih u Beograd. (If I had time, I would travel to Belgrade). - Polite Requests and Modesty: Da li biste mogli da mi pomognete? (Could you please help me?), *Hteo bih kafu. (I would like a coffee). - Subordinate Clauses of Purpose / Wish: Voleo bih da dođeš.* (I would like you to come).
Clitic Ordering: The particles bih, bi, bismo, biste, bi are clitics occupying the second syntactic position in the clause.
Examples
Kada bih imao više slobodnog vremena, rado bih putovao po celom svetu.
If I had more free time, I would gladly travel around the whole world.
