Passive Voice & Passive Participle in Serbian
Passive Voice and Participles (Trpni glagolski pridev i pasiv)
Formed through analytic copula biti + passive participle in -n / -t (knjiga je pročitana) or through reflexive passive with se (kuća se gradi).
In Serbian grammar, the *Passive Voice (Trpno stanje / Pasiv)* shifts the thematic focus from the agent to the patient or result of the action through two principal grammatical models:
*1. Periphrastic Passive with Passive Participle (Opisni pasiv: biti + trpni pridev): - Constructed using the auxiliary biti (in any tense) combined with the Passive Verbal Participle (Trpni glagolski pridev) ending in -n, -na, -no or -t, -ta, -to: - napisati → napisan, napisana, napisano (written) - otvoriti → otvoren, otvorena, otvoreno (opened) - pročitati → pročitan, pročitana, pročitano (read) - uzeti → uzet, uzeta, uzeto (taken) - prokleti → proklet (cursed). - Example: Knjiga je napisana prošle godine. (The book was written last year). - Example: Sve zgrade su obnovljene posle rata.* (All buildings were restored after the war).
*2. Reflexive Passive with 'se' (Refleksivni / Povratni pasiv): - Constructed with 3rd person verb + reflexive clitic se. Extremely common in journalistic announcements, instructions, recipes, and rules when the agent is anonymous, generalized, or irrelevant: - Ova knjiga se čita u celom svetu. (This book is read throughout the whole world). - U Srbiji se pije odlična kafa. (In Serbia excellent coffee is drunk). - Kako se piše ova reč?* (How is this word written?).
