Direct & Reported Speech (Upravni i neupravni govor) in Serbian

In Serbian syntax, transforming *Direct Speech (Upravni govor) into Reported / Indirect Speech (Neupravni govor)* is governed by straightforward subordinate clause transformations:

The Fundamental Rule: NO Tense Backshifting (Nema pomeranja vremena): Unlike English or Latin, which strictly enforce sequence-of-tense backshifting (e.g. He said: 'I am tired' → He said he was tired), Serbian strictly retains the exact grammatical tense of the original utterance: - Direct: Marko je rekao: «Sada radim.» (Present tense) - Indirect: Marko je rekao da sada radi. (Marko said that he is working — retaining present radi, NOT past radio je!). - Direct: Ana je rekla: «Sutra ću doći.» (Future tense) - Indirect: Ana je rekla da će doći sutra.* (Ana said that she will come tomorrow).

2. Reporting Questions with 'da li' / Interrogatives: - Direct: Profesor je pitao: «Da li ste pročitali tekst?» - Indirect: Profesor je pitao da li smo pročitali tekst. (The professor asked whether we had read the text). - Wh-questions retain the interrogative pronoun: Pitao me je gde živim. (He asked me where I live).

3. Reporting Commands with 'da': Imperatives transform into subordinate da + present clauses: Rekao mi je: «Dođi!» → Rekao mi je da dođem. (He told me to come).
